ABOUT

Elsie is a retired Decorative Arts historian living in Maryland with her husband, Jim, and their beagle, Walter. In her home studio, she creates both 2-dimensional collage art and 3-dimensional tiny houses in various sizes. Colors, patterns and juxtaposition of visual elements drive her designs.

The collage cards are made by attaching a variety of materials (papers, fabrics, found objects) to playing cards of various sizes (3.5 x 2.5”, 4 x 6”, 6.75 x 4.5” and to larger bases.  Small milk cartons and cardboard boxes are transformed into tiny houses with tape, papier-mâché and paint before they are decorated with a combination of paper collage, tiny furniture, found objects and tiny inhabitants, both human and animal. The joy comes from the process of searching, combining and attaching. It feels like playing.

In a search for stimulation and social connection during the Covid lockdown of 2020, Elsie discovered an online world of mixed media and collage. Soon, collage became her focus. Her intent with each design is to engage with the viewer on an intimate visual level.
